It would be nice to treat all patients without taking teeth out but sometimes the teeth are so crowded that there is just not enough space. If a patient has large teeth and small jaws the teeth will not fit!

Normal fixed braces will not interfere with the speech. Some appliances such as removable braces or lingual fixed braces can make speech difficult until the mouth becomes used to them. This may take anywhere between a few days for removable braces and more for lingual braces.

Once we have planned your treatment the success is a joint effort between the orthodontist and patient. You, as the patient can contribute to the success by: 1. Good quality oral hygiene and gum care. 2. Wear the devices and elastics as advised. 3. Minimise breakages. 4. Keep appointments as scheduled. 5. Following advice on retention.

Most orthodontic treatment is not urgent from a medical point of view. It is important to see some cases more urgently where growth is critical or where the teeth have become impacted under the gums. Our referral triage system will identify these small number of cases or your dentist can call us directly for anything really urgent.

This is different to sensitivity of the mouth which is discussed in the next FAQ. The roots of the teeth have to move through the jawbone in order to reach their ideal position.
